One of my favorite books is 'Two Years Before The Mast'. A true story written about a mans voyage as a crew on a whaling ship from Boston to California in the 1820s. One event in the book is when they stopped in Santa Barbara, CA, all the townspeople and local ranchers were camped on the beach in tents because of wildfires in the hills.

Is that the part were Dana gets off the ship and works for a while with a crew collecting hides? It's been a while since I read the book.

Yes, that's the one. I first read it when I lived in San Diego. He also worked on the shore in San Diego boiling chunks of whale into oil. It was interesting reading his descriptions of the coast and comparing it to how it's changed. When he returned to Boston his brother went to CA, married a Spanish landowners daughter. That's Dana, Dana Point is named after.
