And whatever happened to on-the-job training for fields like this? Why should a kid have to spend 5 years training and accumulating debt to work on trucks? Why not spend a couple years at a technical high school to get the basics and then getting a job that will train you the rest?

It's worth noting that some of this complexity is essentially mandated by the government to meet over zealous safety and EPA standards. These regulations need to be scaled back to allow automakers more design freedom.
