Local comments on stories talk about how the place was basically just a high interest rate trap selling crap furniture at inflated prices.

That is exactly what it was. From what I remember it was mid-tier furniture and if you paid cash it was generally a good deal. But they were a classic predatory financier and if you bought on their credit you were hit with 30% interest rates or what the local laws allowed to be the max interest rate they could get away with.
