Mostly it's due to the social media companies raping their customers. At first, social media is kind to its audience and customers. It starts by allowing freedom of speech. As the platform gets bigger and more powerful, it starts bullying its audience and trying to attract advertisers. Later, the social media platform gets greedy and rapes its advertisers.
I have to ask, does the advertising really do any good on these platforms? Bots don't really buy much.
You are correct. Advertising is mostly not useful. I prefer old school advertising: interacting with real people. The idea of paying for user engagement is ripe for fraud because the platforms can cheat very easily.
Word of mouth is still the most useful way
