I still use the machine. But anyone retarded enough to think boiling hot water isn't hot enough to clean their clothes/dishes, or even just room-temp water is an idiot.
You are correct, boiling hot water agitated will usually get your clothes somewhat clean. However, not all of us have nothing but asbestos pantaloons and have to wash our cotton clothes in something less than 210°F water. Having a release agent helps get the crud out of the fibers.
You don't need to dump a ton of detergent in the wash, usually a few tablespoons of liquid is enough for lightly soiled laundry. I go through one jug of detergent per year.
