If we would start reprocessing our nuclear "waste", we'd have around 300-500 years of fuel without new mining. And reactors like LIFTR would make it go much longer.

I'd rather see it repurposed than seeing it sit in underground leaky tanks.

These are the cooling ponds you hear so much about. They sit for a decade or so. Then they are moved into a cask and place into a storage facility on site. They generally don't leak. That "repurpose" should be to turn it back into fuel. Which would then leave behind around 2%-4% of actual waste of the original "waste" placed into the pond.

Gotcha. I was thinking about waste as in what's stored at Hanford but that's from nuclear weapons.
