I own a business. I was laid off from the company a year before I was hired back to take over. We were 6 at the time. We're 2 now. I can't imagine the pain my mentor felt in delivering the news to us that day.
Given the fear we're meant to have courtesy of our political betters what choice did this CEO have? Was he to meet with each employee individually?
Should an email have been sent?
How do you have a meeting with nearly a thousand people to tell them that their services are no longer needed?
I can't imagine it.
I don't know what the right answer is, but I think demonizing this person is a bad thing.

Probably not giving himself million dollar cash bonuses, announcing the company is having a great year, and then canning 900 people.

Fair points. I guess I can take solace in hoping I would choose a better path. I'm not infallible.

The focus seems to be on the method of the deed rather than the true injustice done. That blunts the point IMHO.
