These store CEO's are under the outdated belief that they have to compete alone. The retail chains would be better able to compete with Amazon by combining their online presence into a new competitor for Amazon. As long as they use top quality IT people, they can do it right and actually grow, as long as they don't believe people will pay a higher price. Be competitive and grow.
Just based on my own experience, yes. As big box stores go away, I no longer go to their farther-away locations or buy from them online. I either find another local place that has what I need or purchase it from Amazon - they're evil as hell but no more evil than any other big-box store.
At least the big box stores employs locals. Although you around here we have Amazon fulfillment centers which employs locals as well.
I agree the 20 minute rule is a very real thing. That's one of the reasons I'm bullish on KSS. We had JCP close here recently, most of that traffic is going to the Khol's store one block over.
