Pull the band-aide off and let them do it. Why should the airline employees get a special lifeline? Clearly they don't need these people. Let them collect unemployment like everyone else that got laid off.

As of right now, yes. Those people aren't needed for the industry they're in. That's harsh, but there's no two ways about it.
