When my son was 12, I bought him a hard-back illustrated edition of 1984. Basically one of those comic-novel things (can't remember what you call them). Wasn't sure he'd get in to it, but I hoped.
Sure enough, he blazed right through it, and then came to me and started drawing parallels to what's going on today. I was impressed. He's 15 now and our discussions have grown considerably.
If you have a young kid, get one of these ... graphic novels (that's what you call them) and turn them loose. If I can find more for Strange New World and Animal Farm, I'm grabbing them. Not just for my son but for his kids.
