My apartment complex uses powered smoke detectors. My bf and I each have an apartment and neither of us has smoke detectors that use backup batteries (probably illegal, but whatever) so they only go off if there is smoke or I take a hot shower (it beeps every minute or so until the steam clears since the exhaust fan doesn't actually exhaust so I shower with the door open). Our ghetto-ass neighbors manage to have a beeping alarm. It's been beeping for months. Thank God I can only hear it in my bf's bathroom or if I'm walking outside and they have their window open. It echos across the complex. Stereotypes exist for a reason.
