They're still structures that represent the people of those times when cultures were alive and prosperous. You're thinking of old testament Catholicism and the Holy empire, not Christianity which is centered around the good and faithful and anti-satan and anti-jew
"The people" were at no time in favour of the constructions .. the building of Notra Dame in Paris brought about the nearly complete deforestation of vast tracts of French land which has never recovered.
The ppl were up in arms and the grass roots campaign they formed caused the construction to be curtailed, is why there is a skeleton structure surrounding the building.
As well they were happy with what they had before the forced conversion to Christianity aka the Hebrew religion was imposed upon them, by building churches and Christian edifices across every landscape.
