Hat Tip to @Crensch who recommended this originally.
I haven't watched a lot of anime, but this is one of the best I've seen so far.
Steins;Gate is a time travel drama in 24 episodes. One of those shows that starts out pretty good, but then gets really good. The writers do an excellent job of creating suspense as the mysteries (and horrors) of time travel and fate unravel. The character development as the story progresses is believable and often touching. The ending is satisfying.
There is a gender bending storyline that felt a bit shoehorned and didn't seem to add much to the overall show. That's about the only point I can find fault with.
A spinoff/sequel to the first season called Steins;Gate 0 is out there. I have started watching it and from what I can tell it's just not as good, though the original show set the bar high. Maybe it's the kind of thing you watch because you love the characters and want to see more of them. If I decide to finish it, I'll try to come back and tell you if it's better to watch that or just watch the original Steins;Gate again.
