I am a huge fan of FO Played the originals in the 90's Love FO3 and 4 and Fallout76. With that said. I get so bored on NV I just quit. I start a new play through and quit every time. What is even weirder I use to live in the area that game takes place. So you would think I would have a better connection with NV.
God...I know EXACTLY what you mean! The combat is a joke, and the game play gets stale. However, story wise, it's legend. Mr House forever.
However, and I know it's almost heresy to say this, BUT....for playing for enjoyment, I actually prefer 4 to 3 or New Vegas. Yes, the dialogue is shit, but for pure enjoyment, it's far better than New Vegas in almost every way. Only thing I miss is ammo crafting, but thats a minor thing really. It's especially nice now that Proton has come as far along as it has, cause now I can run it practically as well as Windows (as long as God rays are turned off).
Every FO game I played every chance I got until the game was done. FO3 and FO4 I was addicted. NV I really want to like it. After a couple ours I just turn it off.
I think the biggest issue with New Vegas is the spacing. 3 and 4, you stumble across new spots and locations and ruins all the time. I understand what they tried to do with New Vegas...making it feel like a vast open desert. But it winds up just feeling...empty a lot of the time. Also doesn't help that they cut 60% of their planned content due to time constraints.
