Pretty interesting to see, mostly because I don't really watch new anime and I like seeing what the studios are creating these days in terms of the art (Story telling in Anime has always been pretty consistent)
I was surprised that a lot of the 3d blended in pretty well. A lot of the vehicle shots looked very clean. Not sure if I like the funimation attack on titan character designs though.
I can't tell when, but there was a shift at some point in the industry where artists moved from working on paper and in Paint Tool Sai to a different workflow that gives a different look. More HD, but also more lifeless. Might have something to do with a move toward computer-generated inbetweens, but I'm not sure. Maybe the cleanup practices changed?
Overall though, I would be pretty freaked out if I were an investor or something, because 70% of this trailer is static background shots and B-roll. Kinda plays out like a college class editing project, either the person had no time, or no source material (Unless eastern audiences like being advertised still images instead of animation).
The book must have been pretty popular though, they must have started production of this thing the year of release (2017)
I heard that 3d is cheaper than hand drawing that's why it's getting more and more focus But I'm no expert on those things so maybe what I heard is incorrect
No that's accurate. They've been using 3D for specifically difficult things to animate by hand, like stairs, or lots of vehicles that are moving.
There was a behind the scenes at studio trigger (I think) that showed a few examples where they used 3D, and some of it is superb. (Not all of it though)
