That option offers a smaller area for force projection.
Why do you feel that type of force projection is so important? Especially given our many aircraft carriers.
Land is a zero sum game. And the aircraft carriers could possibly taken out by one missile. It is better to have logistics points on the ground already set, with set airports and harbors or ports. We are already entrenched, don't give that land back to an enemy.
It isn't our land to keep or defend. With cruse missiles and long range bombers we don't need nearly the amount of military bases as we used to, in order to project power.
Who is the enemy tho? Russia? Russia is in no state to threaten us. Hell they have to move their only aircraft carrier around with tug boats!
The Navy says there is a bubble of protection around aircraft carriers, and there is, but who knows how effective that really is.
