Do people understand the purpose of war games is defeat? They start you in a no win situation so you're forced to think and do so out of the box. If you know you can just walk over someone, what's the point of the game?
It's rare a war game is played and you're provided even odds.
This is like when the media spun a sub attack against a carrier group. They claimed US carrier groups would never be safe again against subs.
In reality the rules required consistent routes of the carrier group. They knew exactly where to wait and simply floated to the surface, claiming their virtual kills. Hardly realistic.
But that's the point. The games are rigged to lose. They are not expected to win. If you do, they change the rules to make them harder next year.
