China's Shenzhou-16 is heading for its orbital station. There are three Taikonauts on board. After this launch, the record for the simultaneous presence of people in orbit was broken.

The Chinese manned spacecraft Shenzhou-16 with a crew of three Taikonauts has successfully entered orbit and is heading for the Tiangong National space station in China.

The crew, which includes the first civilian astronaut, will stay on board the station for about five months, during which time scientific experiments and regular maintenance will be carried out.

After the launch of the Chinese ship "Shenzhou-16" with three taikonauts, the record for the number of people simultaneously in low-Earth orbit was broken. At the moment, there are 17 people there: three Russians, six Chinese, five Americans, two astronauts from Saudi Arabia and one from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

A third module was added to the station in November, and on Monday, space program officials said they had plans to expand it, as well as launch a crewed mission to the moon by 2030.

China built its own space station after it was removed from the ISS, largely because of U.S. concerns about the close ties of China's space programs to the People's Liberation Army, the military branch of the ruling Communist Party.

China's first manned space flight in 2003 made it the third country, after the former Soviet Union and the United States, to send a man into space at its own expense.
