His only hope now is to go transgender
The FBI has arrested a suspect in the state of Massachusetts in the investigation into the leaking of classified U.S. government documents.
The suspect is a 21-year-old man attached to the Massachusetts Air National Guard, the air division of the National Guard, which is made up of reservists.
Earlier tonight, American media wrote about the suspected person behind the leak.
American newspaper The New York Times identified the 21-year-old as Jack Teixeira.
Later in the evening, Justice Secretary Garland confirmed that this was indeed Teixeira.
According to Garland, he has been charged with unauthorized removal of classified National Defense Information. In an earlier press conference, the Pentagon already spoke of a knowingly committed offense.
Teixeira will soon have to appear in court in Boston.
A search of his home also took place this evening.
Teixeira would also be the administrator of an online group on Discord, which is popular among gamers, with about 20 to 30 members.
The members would be mostly young men who talked about guns and video games in the chat group, and exchanged racist memes.
The New York Times spoke with four members of the chat group, among others.
They described Teixeira as the leader of the group who had access to the classified information through his work in intelligence.
The members were said to be from a wide variety of countries, including Russia, Ukraine and other countries in Europe, Asia and South America.
In recent weeks, it became clear that secret documents from both the U.S. military and U.S. intelligence agencies were circulating on the Internet.
At issue were hundreds of pages of documents, with qualifications such as "secret" and "top secret.
Initially, the documents appeared only in a private chat group on Discord. Later, they also appeared on Telegram, particularly in pro-Russian chat groups.
Among other things, the pieces contained sensitive information about the war in Ukraine, such as weaknesses in the country's air defenses.
They also contained information about allies of the United States. This is one of the largest U.S. government leaks in years.
Earlier today, President Biden, who is currently on a working visit to Northern Ireland, expressed concern about the leak. Nevertheless, he said he does not see an acute danger in it.
