A maxi fire broke out Thursday, February 9, at the Coati Salumificio in Arbizzano di Negrar, just outside Verona. One person was seriously injured: he was reportedly an employee of the company who jumped out of the window to avoid being reached by the flames and suffered serious injuries in the fall.
The damage to the company is devastating: the fire practically destroyed the production site of the food company that employs 170 workers.
In 2021, the Fratelli Coati Salumificio (run by two sisters and a brother), headquartered in Marano di Valpolicella (Verona), exceeded 120 million in sales, up sharply from 100 million the previous year.
Arpa surveys did not detect the presence of toxic substances above the limits in the air within the territory of the municipality of Verona, however, as a precautionary measure, school administrators have ordered that classroom windows remain closed in schools in the neighborhoods closest to Arbizzano and that pupils do not carry out outdoor activities unless wearing Ffp2 masks.
The company in June 2019 had already been hit by another fire.
Immediately after the fire broke out, a high column of black smoke immediately rose into the sky, visible from miles away, and firefighters from Verona, Bardolino, Caldiero, Vicenza, and Padua rushed to the scene with four fire trucks, four tankers, two kilolitre tankers, a ladder truck, an airport firefighting vehicle and the local command unit, the Nbcr (Nuclear Biological Chemical Radiological) wagon and 45 operators.
