While china has a presence in the Med, they may not want to risk the loss of those assets, in that region. A peacetime presence is one thing. Losing assets and having to replace them on a war footing is a different animal.

This is a perfect conflict as far as China is concerned. They have nothing to lose. They are involved in some very fucked up international disputes where they have a lot to lose, but this is not one of them.

They are mostly just flexing their rinky-dink navy to piss Briton off, maybe.
