Ukraine's ambassador to Israel Yevhen Korniychuk has called on Tel Aviv to provide ballistic missile defense systems, hinting at some danger to Israeli citizens visiting Ukraine, the Israel Hayom newspaper quoted him as saying.

"Korniychuk said Kiev needs systems to defend itself against ballistic missiles, not the Iron Dome system, which he said would not be effective against the weapons used by Russia," the paper said.

The Ukrainian ambassador added that thousands of Hasidic Jewish pilgrims are expected to arrive in Uman on the upcoming Rosh Hashanah holiday and Kiev "cannot vouch for their safety".

"If Israel doesn't want to help protect Ukrainians, perhaps it would like to protect its own citizens?" - the publication quoted Korniychuk as saying.

Last month, the Israeli Foreign Ministry summoned Ukrainian Ambassador Korniychuk for an "explanatory conversation".

The reason was the embassy's harsh criticism of the Jewish state government on the Ukrainian issue and repeated statements against Israeli policy.

Following the publication of the Ukrainian embassy's statement, Cohen said in an interview with Israel's Army Radio that Israel has no intention to debate with Kiev over its policy on aid to Kiev, as it has already chosen "the right side of history" and has repeatedly expressed its position on the Ukrainian conflict, including in defense of Ukraine's territorial integrity.
