I had just published an article about Erdogan's poker game, after he had demanded Turkey's EU accession in return for his okay to Sweden's NATO accession. However, as I had already suspected in the article, this was only a bluff and Erdogan probably wanted to achieve other goals with this announcement. Here I summarize what has been reported about it so far.
The first news came in the evening when Stoltenberg announced the breakthrough. Stoltenberg said:
"President Erdogan has agreed to submit the protocol on Sweden's admission to NATO to parliament for ratification as soon as possible and to work with him to ratify the document as soon as possible".
Stoltenberg also promised that in return NATO would establish a special mechanism and the post of a special representative for counterterrorism.
Somewhat later, it was reported that Stoltenberg, however, could not yet say when Sweden would join NATO:
"I cannot say when the parliamentary ratification process will be completed. I was a member of parliament myself and I can say that this process takes time. The important thing is that the document will be submitted by President Erdogan for ratification as soon as possible. The final date will be announced by the Turkish parliament."
However, Erdogan will not get EU membership in return.
I doubted anyway that Erdogan would want to join the EU as a full member, since Erdogan is hardly willing to transfer as much sovereignty to Brussels as the EU states have to do.
Erdogan, in my opinion, is interested in the economic benefits of the EU, i.e., some kind of free trade zone, and especially the visa-free entry for Turks into the EU that Turks want and that's what he seems to have gotten, because Stoltenberg also stated:
"Sweden, as an EU member, has pledged to actively seek to intensify Turkey's EU accession process, help modernize the Turkey-EU Customs Union, and intensify visa-free negotiations".
Shortly thereafter, it was reported that the Turkish Parliament will begin the ratification process for Sweden's NATO accession in the fall session of the Turkish Parliament, which begins on October 1.
