The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will apply for the role of NATO Secretary General if she is not re-elected to the EC. This is reported by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica. The publication has data according to which preparations for such a development of events began several weeks ago. The newspaper claims that at the NATO summit in Vilnius in July, an attempt will be made to extend the term of office of Jens Stoltenberg for another year. If this does not work out, the Secretary General will vacate his post in September. Von der Leyen's term of office expires in the summer of 2024. La Repubblica believes that the trip of the head of the European Commission to Canada and the United States, which will begin on March 7, should be considered in the context of her possible candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General. The Italian newspaper writes that von der Leyen would be an ideal ally for Washington, because the other potential candidates are "not entirely convincing".
