So I had to help train some of these guys. Largely, the Afghan recruits would fall into one of three categories:
1- An absolute coward who was pressured into joining the armed forces, usually by an elder male in their family. I'd also put guys who joined to impress women in this category. These guys could be made into a reasonably competent fighting force, in practice- but we lack the resources to simulate combat frequently enough, that I wouldn't count on any of these assholes to have your back if bullets start flying.
2- The obvious "enemy combatant", who looks at you and everything about the USA with absolute disdain. These guys are pretty tough... because they just spent the last several years fighting and evading the US military. Then we "conquer" their region and establish recruitment. You could always pick out these guys- they knew our tactics and tendencies remarkably well. These guys would usually desert and end up rejoining whatever militia will take them, or if their old one reforms they'll link up with them again.
3- Afghanistan's version of diversity hires. Absolutely weak, dumb, cowardly men being given absurd promotions because that's the best we're going to get in the time we have. Many of this guys will go AWOL during training, or vanish shortly after finishing training.
And then there are a handful of guys who are actually pretty smart and skilled, and pretty based. They genuinely want to take the responsibility of fighting for their country and their moon god. Probably double agents. When the enemy knows precisely how you will react to any given scenario, they can plan accordingly to maximize damage. And what better way to get a window into how a fighting force might behave than by observing their training from the inside?
All that being said- most Taliban fighters are hard as nails. Cold, cruel, and absolutely assured in what they're doing- this is a dangerous combination. Their faith has consistently been the obstacle that prevents them from "joining the Western world". Their faith has motivated 20 years of resistance against the USA/NATO. If only Christians had that kind of fire in them, that desire for violence and domination that a typical muslim carries....
