This is going to end in the same way all south american economies end.
Latin America and the Caribbean to keep alive the spirit of Simon Bolivar and build in the American continent something similar to what is the European Union, “but attached to our history and identities” and in that sense proposed replacing the Organization of American States (OAS), “by an autonomous organization not lackey of anyone.”
A body, he stressed, that is “mediator” in conflicts in nations over issues of human rights and democracy, but “at the request and acceptance of the parties.” It is, he stressed, “ a great task for good diplomats and politicians like those that, fortunately, exist in all the countries of our continent.” Recognition to Cuba
During an emotional ceremony for the 238 anniversary of the birth of Simón Bolívar, in front of the foreign ministers of the great majority of Latin american and caribbean countries, formulated a recognition of Cuba, for its value assert its sovereignty against the united States, and stressed that it is necessary to dialogue with the powerful neighbor to the north, in search of a new relationship, a new relationship with the united States, involving cooperation for the development and well-being for all peoples of the region, but under the principles of non-intervention, self-determination and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Let us begin in our continent a relationship under the premise of George Washington, according to which, “nations should not take advantage of the misfortune of other peoples,” insisted the president of the republic, who made clear that “the policy of the last two centuries is already unacceptable,” followed by the United States and “characterized by invasions to put or remove rulers at the whim of the super powers. Let's say goodbye to impositions and blockades,” he stressed.
Accompanied in the presidium of the foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard, the head of government of the City, Claudia Sheinbaum, other members of his cabinet, his wife, Beatriz Gutierrez, and the writer Isabel Allende, the president of Mexico highlighted that since the countries of the continent became independent of Spain, the united States has never ceased to perform operations open and covert front of the independent countries located south of the Rio Grande, and there is only one case, that of Cuba, which for more than half a century, has asserted their independence, facing politically to the neighbor to the north”.
We can, he added, “agree or disagree with the Cuban Revolution and its government, but to have resisted 62 years without subjugation, is quite a feat. My words may provoke anger in some or many, but as René Pérez Joglar's song from Calle 13 / Residente says,”I always say what I think."
Consequently,”I believe that, for their struggle in defense of the sovereignty of their country, the people of Cuba deserve the prize of dignity and that island should be considered as the new Numancia for its example of resistance, and I think that for the same reason it should be declared a world heritage site."
To the applause of those attending the event, he insisted that it is time for a new coexistence between all the countries of America, because the model imposed more than two centuries ago is exhausted, has no future or exit and no longer benefits anyone.
He proposed setting aside the dilemma of joining the U.S. or defensively opposing it and exploring another option: to engage with the U.S. rulers and convince and persuade them that a new relationship among the countries of America is possible.
López Obrador considered that at present “there are unbeatable conditions to achieve this purpose of respecting us and walking together without anyone being left behind”.
In this effort, he added,”our experience of economic integration with respect to our sovereignty, which we have been carrying out in the conception and application of the Economic and Trade Agreement with the United States and Canada, may help".
Tribute to Bolivar
During his speech, he made an extensive tour of the biography of Simón Bolívar, in his effort to achieve the integration of the American continent. "Not everything was easy in his struggle: he lost battles, faced betrayals and, as in any transformative or revolutionary movement, internal divisions appeared that can even make more harmful than the struggles against the real adversaries.
For his part, the secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, noted that the question that the foreign affairs officials of Latin America and the Caribbean will answer today is whether it makes sense, whether it is essential to act together, “to make our voice heard.”
He stressed that for a year and a half they have lived daily the risk of the Covid-19 pandemic, signs of solidarity, support and commitment from all the republics, and “the great lesson is that if we do not act together and act as one voice, nobody will take care of us, nobody will ask: Will Latin America already have vaccines?”.
As part of the ceremony at the historic Chapultepec Castle, singer Lila Downs sang a piece referring precisely to Latin America and the Caribbean, which was followed with the palms of the presidium, and a loud applause from all the attendees.
