I don't even consume radio or TV or mainstream internet (hardly see anything not on Drudge or poal), but somehow I know the status of the rescue.

If it bleeds, it leads. Emotional stories make the media money. While this event continues, they can charge more for ad space knowing that businesses know people will be looking at that story more closely.
