Authorities warn that a maximum 10ft tsunami is expected to reach coastal areas, urging residents in low-lying zones to evacuate immediately and move to higher ground.
Those in areas that are affected have been cautioned to stay away from coasts and river mouths, which could overflow. Officials have warned that in some areas, the waves could exceed the 'expected tsunami height'.
The epicentre was off the east coast of Aomori Prefecture. The quake struck at around 11.15 pm local time, with Japan's Meteorological Agency reporting that the epicentre was located approximately 33 miles deep beneath the seabed.
