Ukrainian troops have shelled Europe's largest nuclear power plant over the past two days, said Renat Karchaa, an adviser to Russian state nuclear operator Rosenergoatom.

He said Ukrainian shells hit a radioactive waste dump at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.

Karchaa said the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant was attacked earlier in the day, with six shells hitting the cooling system of one of the rectors and two falling into a radioactive waste dump. He added that no employees were injured.

According to the Russian defence ministry, the plant was shelled twice on Sunday and 11 "large-calibre artillery shells" were fired on Saturday.

The ministry said the shells fell near the reactors and that the firing also targeted power lines.

"It is impossible to assess the consequences of the shelling because there is a danger of further attacks," Karchaa said. He said the nuclear plant had not come under such intense attack since late September.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), whose team is monitoring the situation on the ground, said "more than a dozen blasts were heard within a short period of time" on Sunday. The statement added that "experts could see some of the explosions from their windows".

"Whoever is behind this needs to stop immediately. As I have said many times before, you are playing with fire!" said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
