I find it difficult to believe that after all he went through he would just say "oh well win some lose some" and retire in Argentina.

That's not what he did? He knew what the (((allies))) would do to him. The torture the German citizens went through is unimaginable. He would have been medically sustained and tortured for years and years and years. How it's hard to believe is absurd as well. His corpse was never found either.
