A protester climbed the building and pulled down the EU flag because of the threat made by von der Leyen to Italy that the country would be punished if it deviated from "democratic principles".

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen threatened Italy that it would be punished in case the country's policy does not comply with that of the EU. The reason for her statement was the forecast of a far-right victory in Sunday's parliamentary elections. In turn, the right in Italy has threatened von der Leyen that Italian MEPs will demand a vote of no confidence against her in the European Parliament.

The EU has "tools " to respond if the political situation in Italy goes in a "difficult direction", European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. She hinted that the country could face penalties like those recently imposed on Hungary and Poland if the upcoming elections lead to the victory of parties that have different policies from those generally accepted in the EU.

"What is this, is it a threat?" the leader of the far-right Lega party, Matteo Salvini, replied on Facebook. "Respect for the free, democratic and sovereign vote of the Italian people," he added.

"It was a vile threat. This lady represents all Europeans, her salary is paid by all of us and this was a disgusting and arrogant threat," he said. "On Sunday Italians vote, not bureaucrats from Brussels, if I were president of the European Commission I would be more worried about energy bills," Salvini said.
