Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ordered a review of the legalization of pornography and eroticism. This step was taken in response to a petition that collected the necessary 25,000 signatures so that the issue could be considered by the authorities.

Commenting on the initiative, Zelensky made it clear that he had awarded Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal "to process the issue raised in the electronic petition... and inform its author about the results of the review“"

Zelensky noted that the national constitution gives Ukrainian citizens the right to freedom of thought, speech and expression. This provision, however, is limited to, among other things, the Law on the Protection of Public Morals, which prohibits the production and distribution of pornographic materials.

The petition's author, Taras Siromski, said that Ukrainian legislation in this area has many gaps that "give room for its interpretation", especially with regard to how eroticism is actually defined.

"The legislation does not explain well where eroticism is in art, and where pornography is," he wrote. The author also said that banning porn can also contribute to corruption.

At the same time, the legalization of pornography is "an ideal opportunity to bring money to the Ukrainian budget," he said.

The response to Zelenskiy's petitions comes after he urged the Prime minister to consider legalizing same-sex marriage over another country last month. At the time, however, he noted that the constitutional provisions on marriage currently cannot be changed due to martial law, declared on February 24, the same day that Russia launched a military offensive in the country.
