They're made in nuclear reactors, and dubbed nuclear waste. Wyoming, Pennsylvania, Idaho, and Utah have high grade natural uranium deposits. Rare earth mines have a fair bit of thorium and other radioactive compounds.

There is a few old mines maybe still going in colorado but im sure obmers epa shut them down too

Uranium One, the company: in addition to Kazakhstan, it also gives the Russians control over many uranium deposits on US soil. The company owned quite a number of now-defunct US mines and potential mining sites. US mines that were closed successively in the 90s due to the fact that the uranium US energy companies (and the Pentagon!) needed could be gotten cheaper as imports from Russia.
