Charles Martel was the leader of the Frankish army and, effectively, the ruler of the Frankish kingdom, or Francia. He is known for winning the Battle of Tours in 732 CE and turning back the Muslim invasions of Europe. He is the grandfather of Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor.
