In the investigation of the MP, The Church of Edir Macedo is cited for having called the attention of the financial activities Control Council (Coaf) after moving R$ 5,902,134,822 between May 5, 2018 and April 30, 2019.
Atypical movements carried out by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, totaling almost R$ 6 billion, drew the attention of the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro to possible involving the IURD.
The information is contained in a document sent to justice by the Deputy Attorney General for Criminal Affairs and Human Rights of the MPE-RJ, Ricardo Ribeiro Martins, obtained by the G1. In the petition, the church is cited for having called the attention of the financial activities Control Council (Coaf) after moving R$ 5,902,134,822 between May 5, 2018 and April 30, 2019.
The suspicions about the IURD are directly related to the scandal of the headquarters of the Propina, which is being investigated by the MP in Rio de Janeiro city hall. Among the targets of the operation is the mayor Marcelo Crivella, licensed Bishop of the Universal Church and ally of the investigated businessman Rafael Alves, who gained fame for messages in which he threatened to reveal alleged corruption and money laundering schemes involving the mayor, his family and the church. Alves is identified as an influential actor in the municipal government and suspected of collecting bribes with the collusion of Crivella.
According to the MP, another important name in the plot is that of Mauro Macedo, cousin of the founder of IURD, Edir Macedo, who coordinated campaigns of Crivella and is suspected of receiving Box 2 and enticing entrepreneurs for different types of corruption.
For the prosecutor's Office, also according to the G1, it would be "plausible to conclude" that the Universal Church is being "used as an instrument for money laundering fruit of endemic corruption installed in the high summit of the municipal Administration".
