The case sows panic in the parliament in Kiev: politicians, businessmen and people contracted the coronavirus during a festive trip to Savoy.
A wind of panic seized the rich Ukrainian elite on learning that several of its members had been contaminated by the coronavirus in one of its favorite playgrounds: the French station of Courchevel. Politicians, senior officials, businessmen, starlets and judges have returned to the virus stuck to the skin. A first deputy, Sergiy Chakhov, transmitted the virus to his colleagues, thus creating a "cluster" within the parliament itself and giving rise to paranoia at the top of the state.
The case was revealed on Thursday by the weekly Novoe Vremya . Journalist Kristina Berdynskykh linked the first public cases of Covid-19 to personalities at a specific location: Courchevel. "It is a tradition around 8 March, Women's Day public holiday home: from wealthy Russians and Ukrainians go to party in Courchevel, says the interviewer in time . It's fascinating, they divide up space and time. The Russians are there from March 1 to 10, and the Ukrainians from March 7 to 15. ”
Flags and Dom Pérignon.
All this little world is therefore together from March 7 to 10. "These circles in Kiev and Moscow know each other very well, they spend their time in luxury restaurants and partying until the end of the night," continues Kristina Berdynskykh. The favorite place for Ukrainians is an open-air terrace at the bottom of the slopes with its 900 wine list. "Several of my sources believe that the broth of culture was this crowded terrace," comments the journalist.
Another short version. Main investigative source, Ukrainian oligarch on holiday in valley, circulates virus may have accelerated on the night of March 8 in a club popular with Russians and Ukrainians as it is the only place where they are allowed to dance on the table, flag in hand, drinking Dom Pérignon magnums from the neck. "It was packed this evening, people were literally spitting on it, we had advised several people not to go," says Kristina Berdynskykh.
"I just flew to Switzerland, then a car to Courchevel for a romantic weekend with my wife," replied deputy Sergiy Chakhov to the investigator. Back in Kiev, he goes about his business in parliament, shakes hands, greets the new prime minister and then falls ill. "Shakhov caused chain contamination by infecting two other deputies, and the latter their neighbors in the stands," notes Kristina Berdynskykh.
A judge of the Commercial Court of Kiev is hospitalized. Officials from the regional administrations of Kharkiv (east) and Zaporizhjia (south-east) fall ill. A pop singer agrees to testify, then retracts: according to several sources, her husband, founder of the largest network of gyms in Ukraine, caught the coronavirus. All went to Courchevel, where we also saw Andriy Bogdan, who was until January the head of the presidential administration.
The latter is tested negative for the coronavirus and communicates it on social networks. The Ukrainian parliament nevertheless gives in to paranoia, according to Kristina Berdynskykh. "Many MPs have gone semi-isolated and want to be tested," she said. The journalist couldn't believe her eyes when she saw all the masked and gloved deputies disembark during a special session on March 30. Several Courchevel revelers are tested in a private clinic which confirms 13 cases. Its director, convinced that he had identified the “Courchevel cluster”, alerted the authorities. On March 30, the establishment was reportedly searched by secret service agents who suspect the Covid-19 cases were concealed.
"VIP rooms".
With private clinics banned from treating Covid-19 patients, a public hospital near the government district is preparing for the influx. "VIP rooms" are fitted out there, with personal nurses and drivers. But the investigative site Bihus.info discovers the pot with roses. The head of state must intervene. "There will be no luxury rooms for the members of the Central Committee," jokes Volodymyr Zelensky. You will be placed in the same hospitals that you have built in this country for three decades. Maybe then you will understand what it is not to be treated in Switzerland or in Israel. ”
Since last week, the Ukrainian borders have been closed. According to a specialist in infectious diseases from Kiev contacted by Le Temps , the contamination figures - 1000 cases confirmed on Friday - are "dramatically underestimated, they must be multiplied by 200 or 300". The wave is expected to hit Ukraine in late April. "The Courchevel patients are lucky, they are among the first victims," says Kristina Berdynskykh. "Billionaires, politicians and judges will face the dilapidated state of Ukrainian public medicine when they have never set foot in a public hospital. This time, they have no way out''.
