A delivery of millions of respiratory masks has been lost at an airport in Kenya. Insiders suspect criminals behind the action - or the manufacturer himself. Belgium, however, destroyed its masks by hand.

At an airport in Kenya, six million respiratory masks that should have been delivered to Germany have disappeared. The " Spiegel " reported, citing insider information and the confirmation of a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defense.

Accordingly, the order for masks of the type FFP2 with particle filter should have arrived in Germany on March 20.

According to the report, insiders suspect that the delivery was either stolen by criminals or that the manufacturer may have subsequently negotiated a better price elsewhere for the now much sought-after protective goods and could have delivered there instead.

In a military report written about the incident, it simply said that the masks had not been delivered "because the goods disappeared at the airport in Kenya". Accordingly, the manufacturer has now been asked to “explain the circumstances and events”.

At least there was said to be no financial damage - the masks should only have been paid for when the delivery arrived in Germany.

Government officials told WELT that the contract for the delivery of the protective masks had been concluded by the General Customs Directorate, which reports to the Ministry of Finance, not the Bundeswehr Procurement Office.

Fortunately, no money had flowed yet. What exactly happened - a theft on the spot or a dubious provider - is still being clarified by customs. The “Spiegel” has since corrected its original report accordingly.

Six million FFP2 breathing masks have also disappeared in Belgium. However, the circumstances are clear: the country had protective equipment destroyed last year, a few months before the pandemic broke out, according to a report by the newspaper " Le Vif ".

The expiration date had therefore expired ten years after the swine flu, for which they were originally purchased. The responsible ministry felt that it was too expensive to buy a new one.

I don't know, I think the evidence indicates that it's only between 100,000 to 200,000 masks.
