I still think the RTO was the cities telling the businesses to get people back downtown to collect more taxes on food and parking or lose their tax abatements for their overpriced skyscrapers.

I think that is at least 90% of why. It has been proven in multiple studies that productivity did not suffer and in some cases actually went up. Employee happiness and loyalty also increased.

The exact opposite has been measured in RTO. People are pissed, not working hard and looking for new jobs.

Same here. I can make a LOT more $$$ if I am willing to be on-site. If I for some reason cannot find another remote job I may take a on-site that pays MUCH better while I continue to look for a new fully-remote job. Either way, the old employer can piss off.

My company did a survey right when RTO started to get big. I got a peep at the results while working on the HR guy's computer. Over 50% of the office staff said they'd quit if mandated back in full time and 40% of the management.

They rightly realized that would completely implode the company and wasn't worth it. Even a few years later when they built new office space, they built it only to house at most 50% of the total staff at a time. People HAVE to WFH - there's no longer space for everyone to work in the office.

Employees just need to call the bluff on these retards. If shareholders see a 25% stock price reduction because half the staff up and quit and revenue tanked, they'll change their tune or get fired themselves.

I have always made it very clear to the companies I have worked at remotely if they mandated RTO I would be looking for a new job. I have also been very clear that full time remote is not negotiable when looking for a new job via recruiters or HR people.

I already take a pay cut to be fully remote and I am willing to take it. Otherwise I could make a LOT more than what I make now but I would be commuting a minimum of 1hr each way 5 days a week. The loss of time, fuel costs, lack of flexibility for errands/etc is just not worth it to me. I even have multiple internet connections in the event one is down so I can still work when others can't. I consider it the cost of business when you work remote.
