Anecdotal, but relevant: The company I work for recently asked employees who are not tied to physical offices (we have several, but most of the workforce is remote) if they'd like to see offices opened up in locations that don't already have them, allowing for in-office work. The overwhelming response was negative. I have had multiple conversations with coworkers who have said they'd find other work before going back into the office every day.
When the 'pandemic' was winding down I had already been looking for a new job because I knew that they were going to force RTO.
I found a new job that was fully remote permanently and have been there sense.
The day After my last day at my old job? They forced RTO for 5 days a week with no ramp up or exceptions. Before the pandemic we only did 4 days in the office per week unless there were major issues and it was all-hands on deck.
Unless forced to I will never work somewhere that is 5 days in-office again. Even if I have to for a while ill be looking for remote at the same time while im paying my bills. The work I do could have been remote for over a decade but companies just did not want to allow it. I am even ok with taking a small pay cut to be fully remote. That way I can live where I want and stay out of the commie cities.
I've been mostly remote for years - even before the lock-downs. I would occasionally go into an office for meetings with a client, but that's about it. I have turned down multiple job offers that required either full-time or partial in office work.
Commuting for the type of work I do is just stupid. Its a waste of time, fuel, money, etc..
All because some middle manager moron can justify their job walking around making sure people are at their desk. Not only that, I get so much more work done without people randomly dropping by my office every half an hour to just BS.
When I was mostly full-time in office I could get maybe 3-4 hours of work done per day... On a good day. It probably was closer to 2 hours. Working remotely, I can focus and I easily get 6+ hours of work done every day and probably get 2-3x more work done per week in the same time I would have been in the office.
It's not for everyone but for the poeple that like working remotly and are able to keep themselves on-task its great.
