Just to show you how petty and vindictive some of these employers can be:
Back when I was 20 years old, I worked for this pretty big regional company and was stationed out of their NYC Office. It was a very low-paying job and after a few months, I had found something else that paid more. So, I remember splitting from this company pretty amiably (not sure how much notice I gave, but there was no animosity or harsh words) and the personnel manager, a man in his late 50's called me into his office to discuss it. He was trying to put me at ease and he was inquiring why I wouldn't stay and work for him. I explained that I was getting more money at the new job. He then made a concerted effort to interview me and try to find out where I was going. He asked me a couple of times and I politely declined to tell him as he cajoled me to reveal the name of the other company, but I politely stood my ground.
On payday, I went in to pick up my check and it wasn't there. I was told some bullshit story and that I had to come back next week. Ditto the week after that: No check, bullshit story. The third week I went back and there was still no check. The receptionist who dispensed the checks sat behind a thick, plexiglas window, which I raged out and punch in. It landed in one piece, frame and all, in her lap. She looked up at me in shock and then after a few seconds , another woman came out and said they were calling the police, so I dipped down the stairs and out of the building. This just goes to show you how nasty an petty some of these fucks can be. Probably 12 years later, my Dad was searching one of those websites where funds from dead bank accounts and such are held by the state and you can claim them, and he found that check (I think it was like for $90) there and I got it after all of those years.
