I read that Tung oil was a good finisher, but I'm looking for a good finish if not that one, and the best process to treat said wood. This is African Ipe, if that matters.

And no, I'm not done sanding.

Edit: I want to put a design on this too, I was thinking I would use the woodburner.

I’m a big fan of tung, real tung, not that Home Depot stuff. Real milk paint co sells good stuff. Takes time to fully harden, but then it’s soaked in and the wood is incredibly durable, also easily touched up in the future if it does wear. Does add a little yellow tinge, but all the clear poly alternatives seem to wear off and not soak in and stabilize the wood as well, linseed is ok, but in humid conditions I e had it mold after dry.I use tung on door thresholds of oak to cutting boards.

How long to soak, like a week?

Add solvent per recommendation from instructions, overnight in a ziplock is fine. Wipe dry, twice a day for a couple days after. Llet it sit somewhere warm for a month, people do this process to stabilize wooden block planes and they become much better at fine shaving. Just be patient.

How durable does it have to be? Look up “film finishes.”

As durable as a ring has to be...?

Wipe on polyurethane? It is thinned down so it will not build up enough to chip off.

Edit; come to think of it any thinned down barrier coat would be better than an oil which will dissipate. high-quality shellac thinned with alcohol or nitrocellulose lacquer thinned with lacquer thinner. You could even play around with clear nail polish that I think is thinned with acetone.

How about teak oil?

I’d go with a beeswax or olive oil.

Stupid question: can I use my extra-virgin olive oil from the kitchen?

Yep, just wipe rub it in, let it sit and wipe off the extra. Same as any other oil. Used it on a Teether I made for the baby.
