I kind of thought so too, and I went ahead and posted it anyway. Tried it myself on the saw afterward too. You are correct, they are not even, though that could be attributed to a number of factors.

It does in fact make an octagon though. I mainly wanted a tutorial like this to make a blank for a large dowel I needed. Make octagon, sand down corners, have cylinder. For that, this video worked a treat.

It’s certainly close enough for that and for chuck’n up in a lathe to turn without a lot of bump. I suspect the problem to be in the blade kerf. Moving the fence in half the kerf width or so would probably do the trick if’n you had to have absolutely equal sides.
