I've seen people hold the square as a guide, and I'm just not that good with a circular saw to do that right. Much easier for me to just spend the extra half a minute or so and clamp a block down. Edit: Also, I own three squares and often use more than one at a time to ensure I get similar results. All three seem to be 'square enough'.
