My dad does this. He even made a yarn bowl for me as a birthday present, something I would never have splurged on.

Video can never capture the beauty that you can see in person. It's like trying to show the colors in a mahimahi, or even just your favorite barn yard mutt chicken who managed to get the best iridescence from both parent breeds.

You just can't :).

Good burl wood is so fucking expensive. This guy probably paid a small fortune for that piece.

My dad finds them at his hunt club. He helps maintain the property and no one else cares if he takes them.

A large enough piece to turn a bowl is worth hundreds. Burl wood is inherently weak. It usually gets sliced into veneer for maximum shekel extraction.

If he has a good supply he could support himself sourcing it. The slants deliberately infect shitty native trees to produce it but it's garbage quality. Real burl wood of any decent quality is worth a lot of money.

He's retiring and is doing this to fill his time as a hobby, so I don't think he'll sell them. But you're right, he could make a lot off of them. Right now he's enjoying the process of creation and gifting.

Don't really like it. No offense, but it's totally useless as a vase, and is a shape that is going to get knocked over all the time and roll away, plus it's got those huge defects in the sides and neck. I've seen more beautiful wood grain in maple many times. It doesn't have the illusion of 3-dimensional depth that maple grain can have.

I mean.. it's obviously just a matter of opinion, but that's a pretty common shape for turned vases like that. It's the kind of vase that will sit up on a shelf somewhere as an art piece, so it's pretty unlikely it's going to get kicked around.. But, yeah, maple burl is very hard to top in terms of beauty. The word you're looking for is chatoyance, which I saw a couple spots in this piece would make that effect, but he didn't rotate the vase at all to show that.
