I used to have to patron them, since they were the only place in the area that sold Olympic weights for my gym. Then a few months ago, I had a great idea. I checked out a local metalworking shop, and had them quote making the plates for me. I can have them made, with far tighter tolerances for a couple quarters per pound, meanwhile if you go to the store, you can expect to pay $.80-1 per pound. SAVING MONEY BREHS, and supporting local!
That's sweet, about a buck a pound is pretty standard.
Yep. I think it's to recoup shipping costs, more than cost of materials. But, when you're visiting a local metalworking shop, across the road from the foundry, not much need for the shipping markup. Throw them in the trunk, slap a coat of durable paint on, and you're good to go.
