They closed the original REI store that had been in a strip mall for 30 years. It was in a fine location, but they wanted to make more money and a lot of the kids with money don't have cars anymore, and can't easily get to that strip mall. So they built a special building that is half-REI and half high end luxury condos in a ritzy part of town the Pearl District. Their own parking garage and everything. They did well there, but it was hell to get into and out of if you drove there. This was about 15 years ago. Now their new fancy building is overridden by crime and drugs. If you bring a car, you risk it being broken into in the garage, or having the catalytic converter sawed off in broad daylight. Criminals are brazen. Open air drug deals due to decriminalization. Muggings, violent crime, and theft are on the rise thanks to a wave of "quiet quitting" by the police. If you call the police they will never show up. I laughed when I heard this news. All that money down the drain.
