Not to sound like a glownigger, but you talking about political activity or just keeping your close community together to look out for each other? Don't answer if I'm asking too much.
looking out for each other and becoming independent of the system. Personally working to be more capable, resliant, and working to help others in my life do the same.
tired of waiting around believing in some other shadowy organization to save me.
That's a good cause, but if you feel that your group is competent for it, political activity is a must, even if just on local level.
I'm not talking about leaflets or protests, but taking steps to assert yourself when it comes to administration and decision making in your local government.
