Depends on the source of the bleeding. Sometimes the placenta separates and the bleeding doesn't stop. I believe it's called an abruption of the placenta. They checked my wife for it. My wife had preeclampsia which turned into HELLP which developed into DIC. She basically bled internally due to the absence of platelets. Which led to multiple organ failure from loss of blood. If she had had a C section 5 hours earlier like the doctor at the hospital she was taken to said, she would be alive. If the doctor hadn't waited 2 hours to send her to the hospital after the emergency c section then she would be alive. Fuck the Japanese medical system for killing my wife. I wish we were in the US.
But for you and your family. I'm happy to hear that everyone is doing fine. Honestly if your wife had issues with the pregnancy she's a prime candidate for more complications in the future. I honestly think you're making the smart move. Being widowed is the worse thing that I will ever experience. As for the priest. Don't regret it too much. If he was a good priest/person then he understood the situation he didn't take it personally.
