Sounds like the farmer was irresponsible. Only time I have put out poison was for a specific target and I dispose of the stuff before I leave. Putting out stuff like that is a way to bring attention to yourself. I only trap in private areas and quietly and discreetly dispose of my capture. I did piss off a neighbor in the country when I would shoot his cats but he also was way over the limit. Then too, it baffled me as to why his cats would leave his property, cross the road, walk up the hill and hang out on our family property when there was nothing there for them. One I shot at night when I mistook it for a coon. Get those things comfortable around your place and you can spend thousands repairing the damage. We eventually got a decent dog that chased off all the wild animals as well as the cats which really made things more peaceful. As for the cats, the neighbor couldn't legit complain and he ended with just the ones that stayed home.
