The thumbs are .jpg, so they wouldn't. Not sure why they used jpg though.

edit: i guess there are times where jpg is smaller, but for such tiny images, id guess that png wins. could be wrong though.

Yeah, definitely png is better. When squeezing an image, pixel detail becomes more important. A particular feature might be one pixel thick.
